Sichuan ranks the first in the country in terms of the reserves of Chinese herbal medicine, the varieties of Chinese herbal medicine, and the output of Chinese patent drugs. There are over 4300 kinds of natural herbs in Sichuan. Sichuan is the nation's largest TCM base. Its TCM industry ranks the third in the country, and its sales of TCM raw materials ranks the 9th in China. Bulbus fritillariae, ligusticum wallichii, gastrodia elata, acontum fischeri, Coptis chinensis, Radix Ophiopogonis, radix angelicae, moschus and other genuine medicinal herbs are produced in Sichuan. There are over 100 industrialized production bases of major herbal medicines in Sichuan, where artificial herbal medicines amount to more than 200 kinds and the planting area adds up to over 1.4 million acres. The output of Chinese herbal medicine in Sichuan totals 296,000 tons (excluding Eucommia ulmoides, golden cypress and magnolia officinalis), and the purchase of Chinese herbal medicine ranks the first in the country.
Development in the following fields are encouraged: new TCM products that can get into the mainstream of the international pharmaceutical and healthcare market; standardized production of medicinal herbs and development of brands; the processing industry of medicinal slices and extract; the production industry of Chinese patent drugs and related products of TCM and the logistics industry of drugs; new technologies, new techniques and new equipment that can promote the industrialization of TCM; the international Science & Technology cooperation platform and cooperation network of TCM.
